Dogs, snakes or spiders? Signs a fear of animals is a phobia

  • You shake out your shoes and check the car visor for spiders.
  • You skip bushwalks in the Adelaide Hills in case of snakes.
  • You cross the road when a dog comes the other way.
  • A swooping magpie in spring changes your route to work.
  • A moth or a flying cockroach sends you out of the room.
  • You scroll past animal photos fast, or can’t watch nature shows.

When is it a phobia? Doctors look for strong fear or anxiety about an object or situation. It’s out of proportion to the actual danger, and usually lasts six months or more. It causes significant distress, or gets in the way of daily activities.

Specific phobia is one of the anxiety disorders. Of its common types, animal fears are the most frequent. Insects and dogs are typical.

Bird phobia, cockroach phobia and other animal fears

Any creature can be the focus of a phobia, from frogs to spiders. A bird phobia can make a beach or an outdoor café feel tense. A cockroach phobia or moth phobia may be about the sudden dart or flutter. Some people have a phobia of bugs in general, or a phobia of frogs. A fear of animals in general is called zoophobia.

Why an irrational fear of spiders or dogs feels so automatic

Your fear response fires at the first glimpse, or even the thought. A part of the brain called the amygdala is closely linked to this alarm. Your body reacts before you’ve had time to judge the risk. Maybe it’s the way the animal moves: the scuttle, the dart, the sudden jump.

A phobia might start with past experiences, like a bite or a scare as a child. Maybe a parent was frightened too. Or maybe there’s no clear start at all. For some people disgust is stronger than the feeling of fear. That counts too, and it’s worth telling me.

Steering clear keeps it going, even with no immediate danger. You leave the room, the panic fades, and your mind files the animal as a real threat.

How hypnosis for a spider or dog phobia works

Hypnosis for spider phobia, or any animal fear, starts far from the real thing. You’re relaxed, awake and in control. Some call it a way to access the subconscious mind. We rank your specific triggers, from a cartoon or a distant bark up to the real animal. Then we rehearse each one, mildest first, while your body learns a steadier response.

If a bite or a scare was the root cause of the fear, Rewind can soften that memory. You don’t have to relive it. Symbology works with the images associated with the phobia, so you can reframe them. NLP and Time Line Therapy come in where they fit. These are tools I’ve found useful.

Safe real steps between sessions

Practice in real life is where the change shows. Pick steps that are safe:

  • Look at photos, then videos, then a spider in a sealed jar across the room.
  • Meet a friend’s calm dog on a lead, with the owner holding it.
  • Visit the reptile house at a zoo or wildlife park, behind glass.

Leave wild snakes and spiders alone. Some Australian ones can give a dangerous bite, so the goal is calm, not contact.

How animal phobia hypnotherapy works: video or Adelaide

The program is four sessions, after a free 15-minute phone call.

  1. Free phone call, 15 minutes

Tell me which animal it is, and what the fear has stopped you doing. I’ll be straight about whether I can help. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.

  2. First session

We rank your triggers, from a cartoon or photo up to the real thing. Then we begin, with hypnosis and the mildest one.

  3. Sessions two to four

Each hypnotherapy session starts with a short chat, then hypnosis in a chair, eyes closed. Between sessions you try safe real steps, like a video or a calm dog on a lead. You take a recording home to use before each one.

If you join by video

  • For video you need a quiet room, a steady connection and headphones.
  • We use Google Meet, and if the call drops, I ring you straight back.

Still weighing it up? Ask me anything on a free 15-minute phone call. If I don’t think I’m the right fit for you, I’ll say so.

What the research says about hypnosis and animal fears

Honest answer: I can find no modern controlled trial of hypnosis for animal fears. The published reports are old single cases.

A psychologist may offer exposure therapy, done step by step, and your GP can refer you. Safe, real steps sit at the centre of this program too. Hypnosis is there to ease the fear and anxiety, so each step feels possible.

Are hypnotherapy sessions for animal fears safe?

For most adults, yes. No medicine is involved, and no animals come to our sessions. You might feel tired or a little emotional for a while afterwards.

Were you badly bitten or attacked, and the scene keeps replaying? Start with a psychologist. Allergic to bee or wasp stings? Then some caution is sensible, so talk to your GP about an action plan. If you live with psychosis, or a serious mental illness without support yet, see your GP first. Keep every practice step safe, and never handle wild animals.

Questions about animal phobia hypnotherapy in Adelaide

People ask me these about animal fears and phobias on the free call.

Can hypnosis help with a spider phobia?

Hypnotherapy can help some people feel calmer, as one part of a plan with safe real steps. The research on this is thin, as the section above shows. Feeling calmer after a session is welcome, but it isn’t a success rate.

What’s the success rate for animal phobia hypnotherapy?

I don’t quote one. There’s no modern trial to base a figure on. We track your own steps instead, like staying in the room with a huntsman.

Do I have to touch a spider or a snake?

No. Nothing is brought into our sessions. Real steps between sessions are your choice, and touching is never the goal. For many fears, staying calm nearby is the aim.

What is a fear of spiders called?

Arachnophobia is a phobia of spiders. The phobia for snakes is called ophidiophobia, and a phobia of dogs is cynophobia. Doctors group them all as the animal type of phobia.

Can my child come to sessions?

I see adults 18 and over. For a child who is scared of animals, start with your GP or the school counsellor.

Can we do this by video?

Yes. Hypnosis needs your focus, not a particular room. Starting at home also makes the first real steps easy, like a photo on your own screen. In Adelaide, we can meet in person by arrangement.

Is it covered by Medicare?

No, and you don’t need a GP referral to book. Some health fund extras pay a small benefit for hypnotherapy, so it’s worth checking with your fund.
