Signs your stress has tipped into burnout
The World Health Organization lists three signs of burnout. You feel exhausted, distant from your job, and no longer good at it.
- You wake up tired, even after plenty of hours in bed.
- By Sunday lunch, your head is already at work on Monday.
- Little requests make you snappy, and that’s not like you.
- You’ve stopped caring about things you used to be proud of.
- Your mind keeps working through evenings, weekends and holidays.
- You’re getting more headaches, colds or tight shoulders than before.
A few of these? Read on. Most of them, or a low mood that won’t lift? Please see your GP too. Thoughts of harming yourself? Call Lifeline on 13 11 14 now.
Why a holiday doesn’t fix burnout
The WHO calls burnout a result of long-term pressure at work that hasn’t been well managed. It’s a load problem, not a flaw in you.
Months of it keep your body switched on. A quick pulse, tense muscles and a busy head start to feel normal. Rest can’t do much when your system has forgotten how to come down.
What hypnotherapy does for stress and burnout
Each session gives your body a guided break from being “on”, and teaches you to find that break yourself. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention. You’re deeply relaxed, yet awake and aware, and you can stop at any time.
In that calm, therapeutic state I use relaxation, imagery and positive suggestion. We tailor the work to your needs and goals:
- switching off at the end of the day, instead of replaying it at 2am
- easing the habits and behaviour that keep you pushing past empty
- practising saying no, without the guilt that usually follows
- quieter thought patterns when the to-do list starts shouting
- a ten-minute self-hypnosis routine for when you get home
Sessions can’t change your workload or your boss. They can help you think clearly enough to decide what you want to change, for your own wellbeing. I spent twenty years writing software before this work, so I know that wired-but-tired feeling from the inside.
Your stress hypnotherapy sessions: by video or in Adelaide
It begins with a free 15-minute phone call, and I ring you back within 24 hours.
- A free phone chat
You tell me what’s been happening. I tell you straight if I think I can help. Nothing to sign, nothing to buy. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.
- Session one: your plan
This initial consultation is a full session. We look at what’s draining you and how you want your days to feel. You leave with a plan, a suggested number of sessions and some practical strategies for the week. The $300 for it comes off the plan.
- Follow-up therapy sessions
Each one is a short chat, then hypnosis in a chair, eyes closed. We check how you’re going every time, and adjust if something isn’t landing. You take a recording home, plus a short routine to practise alone.
Video means no commute, which matters when you’re stretched. You need a quiet room, steady internet and headphones. We use Google Meet, and if the call drops, I ring you straight back. Prefer to meet face to face? We can arrange it.
Still weighing it up?Ring-back within 24 hours, at a time you pick. Fifteen minutes, and you can ask me anything.
What the research says about hypnosis for stress
There’s one well-run trial. In 2020, Fisch and colleagues took 95 healthy adults who felt very stressed. One group had five weekly two-hour group hypnosis sessions, plus recordings for home. The other got an information booklet. People in the first group reported feeling less stressed at 5 weeks, and still at 12 weeks.
The fine print: the comparison was a booklet, not another active therapy, and people rated themselves. An earlier 2017 review by the same team found nine trials with 365 people. All had a high risk of bias, so the effect was unclear. Research on burnout itself has barely begun. So the potential benefits are possible, but uncertain. I see it as a help alongside your care, not instead of it.
Is hypnotherapy for burnout safe?
For most adults, yes. No medicine is involved, and you stay aware throughout. Afterwards you may feel sleepy, a little teary or light-headed for a short while. That usually passes the same day.
Who should start elsewhere: burnout and depression can look alike, and they need different help. If your mood has been low for weeks, see your GP first. Victoria’s Better Health Channel advises people with severe depression to avoid hypnosis, and I follow that. The same goes for psychosis, or a serious mental illness without support yet.
While we work together, keep seeing your GP or psychologist. If you feel unsafe, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or 000 in an emergency.

Questions about stress hypnotherapy in Adelaide
Does hypnotherapy work for stress?
It may help, as one part of looking after yourself. One good trial found people felt less stressed for at least 12 weeks. That’s promising, but it is not a success rate.
What’s the success rate for stress hypnotherapy?
I don’t quote one. The research is still thin, as the section above explains, and burnout has hardly been studied. Instead, we check how you’re going, session by session.
Can hypnosis help with stress and anxiety?
They often travel together, so one plan can cover both. If worry is the main thing, my anxiety page may fit better. For a specific phobia, see my phobias page.
How much does a hypnotherapy session cost in Adelaide?
With me, a single session is $300. For burnout we usually agree a plan of 6 to 12 sessions: $1,500 to $3,000 in total upfront. The price box has the details.
What happens during a hypnotherapy session?
We talk first about your week. Then you sit back, close your eyes and follow my voice into a hypnotic state. Afterwards we chat about how it felt.
Will I know what’s going on while I’m hypnotised?
Yes. You hear everything, you remember it, and you can open your eyes whenever you like. You won’t say or do anything you don’t want to.
What are the potential downsides of hypnotherapy?
Usually small: a sleepy or teary hour afterwards. The bigger risk is missing a health problem, so get a GP check for ongoing exhaustion.
Is burnout the same as depression?
No, but burnout can sit alongside anxiety and depression. Burnout is tied to work. Depression colours every part of life. Your GP can help tell them apart. See my depression page too.
Is hypnotherapy covered by Medicare Australia?
No, and you don’t need a GP referral to see me. Some health fund extras pay a little back, so ask your fund.
Can hypnotherapy be done online?
Yes. Most of my sessions happen by video, as online sessions on Google Meet. Meeting in person is available by arrangement.
What if I’m not feeling any different?
Tell me. I’ll change the approach, or say honestly if something else would suit you better. Unused prepaid sessions stay yours for 12 months.
