Why poor sleep turns into a habit
After weeks of poor nights, your body can start to link the bed with being on guard. I often hear it from Adelaide clients. “I’m fine on the couch. Then I get into bed and I’m wide awake.”
Bad dreams can do much the same. One dream comes back again and again. Soon you dread bedtime before you even lie down.
The good news? A learned habit can be unlearned. You can work on this, one night at a time.
How hypnosis helps with sleep
Hypnosis helps by teaching your body to switch off again at night. In hypnosis you’re calm, focused and aware. You stay in charge. We use that calm state to teach your body to let go again at night.
We also look at what keeps you up. It might be worry, a busy mind, or a dream that keeps coming back. For distressing dreams I sometimes use Rewind, a gentle way to take the sting out of a memory or an image.
You’ll get a recording to play at bedtime too. Free sleep apps can be nice. A program goes further, because it works on why you’re awake, not just on drifting off.
Sleep hypnotherapy pages: insomnia and nightmares
There are two sleep pages: one for insomnia, and one for nightmares and night terrors. For everything else I help with, see the Hypno Coach home page.
- InsomniaCan’t drop off, can’t stay asleep, or wide awake at 3am with a busy head.
- Nightmares and night terrorsThe same bad dream on repeat, and a pounding heart when you wake.

How sleep hypnotherapy works: video or Adelaide
A sleep program usually runs four sessions, on Google Meet or in person in Adelaide by arrangement.
- We talk for 15 minutes, free
You tell me about your nights. I’ll say straight out if I think I can help. If I don’t, I’ll tell you that too. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.
- Session one
This opens your 4-session program, by video from home or in person in Adelaide by arrangement. We go over your sleep, when it changed, and what you’ve tried so far.
- Sessions two to four, and practice at home
Long-term insomnia can take a few extra sessions. You take a recording home and I teach you simple self-hypnosis, so you keep going between visits.
Sleep hypnosis recordings to try tonight
You can buy self-hypnosis sleep tracks at hypnotherapyaustralia.store and start tonight. I’ve picked self-hypnosis tracks for different parts of the night: falling asleep, the 3am wake-up, or a head that won’t go quiet.

Check in with your GP tooNot every sleep problem is a habit. Sleep apnoea is a common medical cause. Signs include heavy snoring, gasping or choking at night, and waking tired after a full night. A doctor can check this, sometimes with a sleep study. If you take anything for sleep, ask your doctor before you change it. If you’ve been nodding off while driving, see your GP this week.
Questions about sleep hypnotherapy in Adelaide
Here are five questions people often ask me about sleep, answered plainly.
Can hypnotherapy help me sleep better?
It can help many people relax at bedtime and quieten a busy mind. I can’t promise a result, and I won’t.
It works on why you’re awake, not just on drifting off. Please also see your GP to rule out a medical cause like sleep apnoea.
Will I fall asleep during the session?
Some people drift close to it, and that’s fine. You stay aware and can hear my voice.
You also get a recording to play at bedtime, so the practice carries on at home.
Should I stop my sleeping tablets?
No, not without your doctor. Please ask them before you change or stop anything you take for sleep.
Is it covered by Medicare?
It isn’t covered by Medicare. You don’t need a GP referral to book. Some health fund extras cover hypnotherapy, so check with your fund.
Can we meet by video, or in person in Adelaide?
Either. Many people join on Google Meet from home with headphones. If you’re in Adelaide, we can meet in person by arrangement.

Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy. It is not medical care, it doesn’t diagnose anything, and it doesn’t replace your doctor or a psychologist. If your sleep problems are severe or don’t go away, please see your GP. Adults 18+ only. Last updated 7 October 2026.
