Warning signs that gambling debt is taking over

  • You check your bank balance before you check the time.
  • You’ve borrowed on one card, a loan or from a friend to cover another.
  • Letters, statements or texts from the bank go unopened, or get hidden.
  • You want to cut back, but have trouble setting limits.
  • Part of you believes the next bet could clear it all.
  • You lie awake at night doing the sums.
  • Someone close to you doesn’t know how bad it is.

If that sounds familiar, you’re far from alone, and help is available. healthdirect lists losing money and going bankrupt among the harms of problem gambling. If you’re struggling to cope tonight, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Gambling addiction and debt: why it can feel like a trap

Gambling debt can build quietly. It can start with chasing: you lose, so you wager again to win it back. With online gambling, that can happen in seconds. When the cash runs out, a credit card, a payday loan or a friend fills the gap.

Then the debt itself becomes a reason to gamble. Stress feeds the urge to gamble, and gambling promises quick relief. A big win starts to look like the only way out. healthdirect notes that some people turn to gambling to escape other difficulties. Financial difficulties can become one of them.

Stepping out of the cycle means two jobs at once. One is the money: a plan, a budget, and talks with the people you owe. The other is your gambling behaviour, so the plan isn’t undone on a bad night.

Gambling debt help: who does what

Gambling debt help is a team effort, with each person doing their own part.

  • A financial counsellor handles the money side: a budget, payment plans, and talks with the people you owe. It’s free through the National Debt Helpline.
  • Gambling Help provides free, confidential support for anyone affected by gambling, day or night. Call 1800 858 858, or use its online chat. It can also refer you to local support services.
  • Your GP looks after your health and wellbeing, including any mental health problems. They can refer you to a psychologist.
  • Hypnotherapy with me works on the urge, the stress and the shame that keep the cycle going.

I don’t give financial advice, and hypnotherapy can’t clear a debt. What it aims to do is help you manage the urge while the money plan does its work.

In sessions we rehearse your riskiest moments: payday, a reminder letter, a quiet night alone. You practise a calmer response while you’re relaxed and focused. Debt often brings guilt and shame. Time Line Therapy and NLP are some of the tools I’ve found useful for those. You also learn a short self-hypnosis routine, a self-help tool for nights when the money worry spikes.

How the four sessions work: video or in person

The program is four sessions, on Google Meet or in person by arrangement. Here’s what happens.

  1. A free phone chat

Fifteen minutes. You tell me what’s going on. I tell you plainly whether I think I can help. No pressure. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.

  2. Session one

We map your triggers and betting behaviour, look at what you’ve tried, and agree on what you want instead. Then we begin.

  3. Sessions two to four

Spaced to suit you. For video, you need a quiet room, good internet and headphones. If the link drops, I ring you back. You take a recording home for the nights when the pull is strongest.

Video also means privacy. No one sees you come or go.

Still on the fence? The call is free. We talk for fifteen minutes and you decide later, in your own time.

What the research says about hypnosis for gambling debt

Honest answer: I know of no study of hypnotherapy for gambling debt. The only controlled study of hypnosis for problem gambling had 49 people, and found no difference between its groups.

So hypnotherapy is not a debt solution, and the evidence for it is thin. Financial counselling is the service built for financial issues. healthdirect notes that some people who gamble find financial counselling helps them recover financially. That’s why I work alongside it, never instead of it.

Is hypnotherapy for gambling debt safe?

For most adults, yes. No medicine is involved, and you stay aware the whole time. You might feel tired or a bit emotional for a short while afterwards.

Money stress can weigh heavily, though. If you’ve had thoughts of not wanting to be here, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 now. Call 000 if you’re in danger.

Hypnotherapy is not financial or legal advice. Before any paid debt deal, new loan or bankruptcy, talk to a financial counsellor. I work with adults 18 and over. If you live with psychosis or bipolar disorder, see your GP first. Keep seeing your GP or counsellor while we work.

Questions about gambling debt and getting help in Adelaide

These come up most on the free call.

Where can I get help with debt in Australia?

For financial help for gambling debt, call the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007. It’s free, confidential and independent, and open weekdays from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Its financial counsellors can help with debts caused by gambling. Some specialise in gambling, so ask to be referred to one.

Can you get gambling debt written off?

It depends on the debt and who you owe. Bankruptcy can release you from most debts, but it has serious downsides, so get legal advice first. A financial counsellor can help you understand all your options, including hardship arrangements with lenders.

How do you get in debt from gambling?

It can creep up bit by bit. Losses get chased with more bets, then with credit cards, loans or borrowed money. healthdirect lists relying on others for money after big losses as a sign of a problem with gambling.

How can I financially recover from gambling?

Start with a realistic plan to repay a set amount each week or month. Gambling Help Online suggests arranging payment plans early with the people you owe. Make a weekly budget that includes those repayments. A free financial counsellor can help with every step.

How do I quit gambling and save money?

If you want to reduce your gambling, put barriers up first. BetStop, the Australian Government’s National Self-Exclusion Register, lets you self-exclude from licensed online and phone gambling. Add venue barring for the pokies, and a gambling block from your bank. Then give your money a job. Pay your bills on payday, before anything else. Some people also ask someone they trust to help manage money for a while.

What percentage of Australians are problem gamblers?

It depends how you measure it. A 2022 survey found almost half (46%) of Australian adults who gambled were at some risk of gambling harm. That figure counts low, moderate and high risk together. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports it.

What’s the success rate for gambling debt hypnotherapy?

I don’t quote one, and hypnotherapy can’t clear a debt. No study has looked at hypnosis for gambling debt. What we track is your own progress, like weeks without a bet and bills paid on time.

How much does it cost, and is it covered by Medicare?

It’s the 4-session program: $1,000 in total, paid upfront, with no pay-as-you-go option. It isn’t covered by Medicare. Some health fund extras pay a small benefit.

How can I help someone with a gambling problem?

If you’re worried about someone, one way to help is to talk at a calm, private time. Be supportive and non-judgemental. Encourage them to seek professional help, without risking your own money. Partners and families can get support from Gambling Help on 1800 858 858. It helps people affected by someone else’s gambling. Look after yourself too, and talk to someone you trust.

Is this financial advice?

No. I’m a hypnotherapist, not a financial adviser. Anything about your debts, budget or bankruptcy belongs with a financial counsellor or a lawyer. My part is the urge, and the stress behind it.
