Signs your world is getting smaller
It often creeps in quietly, one skipped place at a time.
- You plan trips around where the toilets and exits are.
- Rundle Mall on a Saturday, or the Central Market at its busiest, feels out of the question.
- You can go most places, but only with one trusted person beside you.
- Long queues, full buses and the middle of a cinema row make your chest tight.
- You spend days overthinking an outing, then cancel on the day.
- There are places you used to go that you’ve quietly stopped going to.
Do you feel overwhelmed, or unable to leave home at all? Has low mood set in for weeks? Please talk to your GP too.
Why agoraphobia keeps shrinking your world
Agoraphobia is a fear of being stuck somewhere that would be hard to leave, or hard to get help in, if panic hit. The name sounds like a fear of open spaces, but it isn’t really that.
So it picks on crowds, queues, trains and shopping centres. A quiet beach can feel fine.
Avoiding keeps it going. You leave the queue, the panic fades, and your mind files that as a lucky escape. Next time the limit sits a bit closer to home. It feels less like fear and more like not wanting to go. Over time you feel stuck, and that unhelpful loop is the behaviour we work on.
How hypnosis helps with agoraphobia
Hypnosis lets you rehearse the places you avoid while your body stays settled. You are relaxed, focused and fully aware. You can hear me, speak, and stop whenever you like. From there we picture the street, the shop or the bus, bit by bit. Your body gets used to a calmer response. The session itself is a safe space to practise.
Between sessions you try small real steps, like the letterbox, the corner shop, or a short drive. We write that list together and you set the pace.
Alongside hypnosis I use Rewind, a gentle way to take the sting out of a frightening memory. Symbology works with the pictures your mind already uses. NLP and Time Line Therapy come in where they fit. They are some of the therapeutic tools I’ve found useful. This work also differs from mindfulness or general stress management, because each session has a clear goal.
Here’s one plain advantage for this fear. Video means the first session doesn’t ask you to do the very thing you find hardest. No driving, parking or waiting room. That won’t fix the fear by itself, but it removes one big hurdle.
How agoraphobia hypnotherapy works: video or Adelaide
The program is four sessions, and it starts with a free 15-minute phone call.
- Free phone call, 15 minutes
Tell me how far you can go at the moment, and what you miss most. It’s a non-judgemental chat, and I’ll be straight about whether I can help. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.
- First session
We map where your limits sit and choose what to win back first. Then we begin.
- Sessions two to four
Each builds on the steps you’ve tried, and we adjust the list. All can be from home. You also get an audio recording to help you feel settled before each step, and you learn quick self-hypnosis.
For video you need a quiet room, a steady connection and headphones. We use Google Meet. If the call drops, I ring you straight back. Later, if you’re local, a session in person by arrangement can become one of your steps. It’s never a requirement.

What the research says about hypnosis for agoraphobia
I know of only one small trial of hypnotherapy for agoraphobia. Fuhr and colleagues in Germany ran it with 36 people in 2023.
Some had 8 to 12 sessions, and the others waited on a list. The first group did better on one way of crunching the numbers, but not on another. There was no comparison with standard care. It’s an early, hopeful sign and nothing more.
The same authors call cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) the gold standard for agoraphobia. That means CBT with real-life exposure to the places you avoid. That’s why real steps sit at the centre of this program. Hypnosis sits alongside your care, not instead of it.
Is hypnotherapy for agoraphobia safe?
For most adults, yes. No medicine is involved. You might feel a little drowsy or emotional for a short while afterwards. The main downside: hypnosis alone won’t widen your world. Real steps do that.
CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) with graded exposure, which means step-by-step practice facing what you fear, is the first-line care for this fear. If you haven’t tried it, ask your GP about a clinical psychologist who offers it. If panic attacks are the main problem, read my panic attacks page as well.
See your GP first if you’re housebound, your mood is very low, or a racing heart is unchecked. The same applies if you live with psychosis or a serious mental illness without support. Keep seeing your GP or psychologist while we work. A collaborative approach with your therapist works well. If you feel unsafe, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or 000 now.

Your GP is part of this tooIf things have been closing in for months, start with your GP. They can rule out medical conditions behind a racing heart or dizziness, and look after your wider wellbeing. Through Better Access, your GP can arrange a psychologist with a Medicare rebate, often by telehealth. My sessions can sit alongside that. Chest pain or trouble breathing: call 000 now.
Who you’ll be working with
I’m Ernest McLeod, Adelaide’s Hypno Coach since 2012, so fourteen years now.

I grew up near Vienna and have called Adelaide home since 1991. Before hypnotherapy I wrote software for twenty years, so my approach to therapy is plain and practical. Most of my sessions now happen by video on Google Meet. I work with people across South Australia and the rest of the country.

Questions about agoraphobia hypnotherapy in Adelaide
People ask me these on the free 15-minute call.
Does hypnotherapy work for agoraphobia?
It can help, as part of a step-by-step plan. The research is thin, as the section above shows, so we pair hypnosis with small real steps. Many clients tell me they feel more settled after a session. That’s welcome, but it is not a success rate.
What’s the success rate for agoraphobia hypnotherapy?
I don’t quote one. Only one small trial exists, so any figure would be a guess. Instead we track your own steps, like the first trip to the shops on your own. The research section above has what is known.
Is hypnotherapy covered by Medicare in Australia?
No. You don’t need a GP referral to see me. Some health funds pay a little back under extras, so check with yours. Psychological treatment from a psychologist through Better Access can attract a Medicare rebate.
What is the average cost of hypnotherapy sessions in Australia?
Fees vary between practitioners, so compare totals. With me, a single session is $300. This program is $1,000 for four sessions paid upfront, or $1,200 as you go.
Who is not suitable for hypnotherapy?
I only see adults 18 and over. If you live with psychosis, or other serious mental health issues without support, start with your GP. If you’re in crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
What are the potential downsides of hypnotherapy?
Some people feel tired or a bit emotional for a while. The bigger risk is using sessions to put off real steps, so I’ll gently keep nudging you towards them. Small positive changes add up, and lasting change comes from those steps.
How can I find an agoraphobia hypnotherapist in Adelaide?
Ask about their training and memberships. Ask whether they specialise in anxiety disorders and how they work with this fear. Get the total price in writing. Then have a short call. That’s how you find the right fit, with me or any other therapist. For a registered psychologist, the Australian Psychological Society runs a Find a Psychologist service.
What happens if it isn’t helping?
Tell me. We check in every session and change tack when needed. If it isn’t right for you, I’ll suggest where to go instead.

A pilot randomised trial with 36 people, comparing 8 to 12 hypnotherapy sessions with a waiting list.
