Does test day go a bit like this?
- Your notes made sense last night. Now the first question looks like another language.
- You lie awake before a big paper, running through everything that could go wrong.
- Your hands shake and your heart thumps.
- Intrusive thoughts of failing break in while you study, so you put the books away.
- You failed a licence test or a uni unit once, and the re-sit feels even bigger.
I work with adults 18 and over. That includes uni and TAFE students, people sitting licence or professional exams, and adults going back for a re-sit. If the worry spills into most of your life, please see your GP too. My page on ongoing worry may fit better.
Why you can’t just tell yourself to calm down
Your nervous system reacts to a test the way it would react to a threat. Muscle tension rises, breathing gets fast, and attention shrinks to the danger. Recall needs the opposite: a loose, wide, curious mind.
That alarm is quick and automatic, a bit like a habit. Willpower and extra hours of revision rarely reach it. Overthinking can feed it. Avoidance is a behavioural loop too: skipping study eases the dread today and grows it tomorrow. So we work at the level where the habit lives, which some call the subconscious mind.
How hypnotherapy can help with exam nerves
It can help some adults feel calmer before and during a test, though it isn’t a sure thing. Hypnosis is a state of focused, settled attention. You stay awake and aware, and you can stop at any time. In that state you tend to be more open to suggestion, so practice sinks in more easily.
Rehearsal. In trance, you picture the week before, the morning of, and sitting down at the desk. You practise staying level until it feels ordinary.
NLP. This looks at your self-talk and thought patterns. We swap “I’ll blank” for something fairer, not a forced affirmation, and set up a simple cue that helps bring the calm back.
Rewind. If past experiences, like a failed test, still sting or dent your self-esteem, Rewind may help. You picture the memory at a distance, like a film, then run it backwards, with no need to share details.
I use these methods because they give you practical coping strategies. Before this work I was a fashion photographer. I watched confident people freeze the moment the lens turned their way. A test hall can do the same thing.
What happens in a hypnotherapy session: video or Adelaide
The program is four one-to-one sessions after a free phone call.
- A free phone chat
You explain what’s going on and when your tests are. I tell you honestly whether I think this suits you. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.
- Your first session
We map your emotional triggers: the night before, the waiting room, the first question. Then you have your first trance and learn the cue.
- Sessions two to four
Each one is a short chat, then hypnosis in a chair, eyes closed. We build on what worked and rehearse the harder moments. You take a recording home, plus a short self-hypnosis routine for the morning of the test.
Most of my sessions happen by video on Google Meet. You need a quiet room, a steady connection and headphones. If the call drops, I ring you straight back. If you’re local and want an in-person session, we can arrange it. Start a few weeks out if you can, so the routine has time to settle.

What the research says about hypnosis for exam anxiety
One good trial points in a hopeful direction. Zhang and colleagues tested 90 medical students with high test nerves, reported in the World Journal of Psychiatry in 2022. One group had hypnosis. The other had progressive muscle relaxation. Each had six weekly sessions of about half an hour.
The first group ended with lower scores, and the gap held at two months. But the share who improved in a meaningful way was close: 64.0% versus 62.22%. Those figures compare groups. They are not a success rate. It’s a single study of one group of students, so I see it as promising, not settled. This work sits alongside your other support, not instead of it.
Is hypnotherapy for exam anxiety safe?
For most adults, yes. No medicine is involved, and you stay aware the whole time. Afterwards you might feel sleepy or a little emotional for a short while.
Some people should start elsewhere. If you live with psychosis, or a serious mental illness without support, please see your GP first. If you have panic attacks outside test time, or your emotional wellbeing has been low for weeks, your GP is a good first step. Keep seeing your GP, psychologist or counsellor while we work together. If you ever feel unsafe, call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
What exam anxiety hypnotherapy costs in Adelaide: $1,000
One session at a time is $300. Most people take the four-session program: $1,000 paid at the start, which is $250 a session and $200 less than paying as you go ($1,200).

Questions about exam anxiety hypnotherapy in Adelaide
Does hypnotherapy work for exam anxiety?
It can help. One trial found it lowered test nerves in students, though a simpler method came close. We set clear goals, like sleeping the night before, and check them each time. Feeling better after one session is welcome, but it is not a success rate.
What’s the success rate for exam anxiety hypnotherapy?
I don’t quote one. The research is too thin for an honest figure, and every person differs. We track your own signs instead, like getting through a practice paper. The research section above sets out what is known.
Does hypnotherapy really work for anxiety?
Some people find it helps, and others don’t, so I make no promises. If worry runs through most of your day, see my page on general worry and talk to your GP.
Is hypnotherapy covered by Medicare Australia?
No, Medicare won’t cover hypnotherapy. You don’t need a GP referral to see me. Some health funds pay a little back under extras, so check with yours.
Can hypnotherapy help with performance anxiety?
Often the same work fits a viva, a recital or a job interview. If speaking to a room is the main fear, the public speaking page is a better match.
Will I be asleep, or out of control?
Neither. You hear every word and remember the session. You can open your eyes whenever you like, and you won’t say or do anything you don’t want to.
Will this lift my results?
I can’t promise better marks. The trial measured nerves, not grades. Feeling steadier helps you use what you’ve learned, but good revision still matters most.
Is a video session as good as sitting with you in person?
Hypnosis relies on your focus, and a screen doesn’t block that. If you’d still like to meet face to face, we can arrange it.
Can you help a high school student?
No. I work with adults 18 and over only. For a school student, the school counsellor or the family GP is the right first step.

Where these numbers come from
Zhang Y, Yang XX, Luo JY, et al. (2022). Randomized trial estimating effects of hypnosis versus progressive muscle relaxation on medical students’ test anxiety and attentional bias. World Journal of Psychiatry 12(6): 801-813. doi.org/10.5498/wjp.v12.i6.801. 90 students randomised to six weekly sessions of about 30 minutes; meaningful improvement in 64.0% of the hypnosis group and 62.22% of the comparison group.
Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy. It is not medical care, it doesn’t diagnose anything, and it doesn’t replace your doctor or a psychologist. If your symptoms are severe or don’t ease, please see your GP. Adults 18+ only. Last updated 7 October 2026.
