Ernest McLeod, hypnotherapist and Adelaide’s Hypno Coach

You’re thinking about sharing something private with a stranger. So it makes sense to know a bit about me first. Here’s where I come from, what drives me, how I work, and the limits of what I do.

Ernest McLeod, Adelaide hypnotherapist, sitting in his consulting room

From near Vienna to Adelaide in 1991

I grew up near Vienna, in Austria. My father worked for the United Nations there. So as a boy I met people from all over the world. I learned early that we all see life a little differently.

My family came to Adelaide in 1991. It has been home ever since.

Software developer and fashion photographer first

Before hypnotherapy, I spent close to twenty years as a software developer. Writing code teaches you to try something, check if it works, and fix it if it doesn’t. I bring that same habit into every session.

Along the way I also picked up a camera. I became a fashion photographer, and my work won awards overseas. Photography taught me to notice small things, like a shift in someone’s face or the way they hold their shoulders.

Why I began The Hypno Coach in 2012

Hypnosis had fascinated me since I was a small child. So in 2012 I began The Hypno Coach in Adelaide. That curiosity became my job, and I now have fourteen years in practice.

Over those years I’ve worked with many people who wanted to stop smoking, vaping or gambling. I also see people with anxiety, anger, and nerves about speaking in public, and people recovering after hard experiences. These days I see clients by video right around Australia, and in person in Adelaide by arrangement.

I also teach other hypnotherapists. The Australian Hypnotherapists’ Association has approved my smoking, vaping and gambling cessation courses for professional development (CPD).

Three beliefs behind every session

My work rests on three simple beliefs. They shape how I talk with you and how we plan.

  • Love life. Even on hard days, there is something worth enjoying.
  • Life is a journey. Setbacks are part of the road, not the end of it.
  • Challenges can be overcome. Not always fast, and not always alone, but step by step.

How I work: hypnosis plus four other methods

I use hypnosis and four other methods. Hypnosis is a calm, focused state. Think of how you can get lost in a film and forget the room around you. You still hear me, you remember the session, and you can open your eyes whenever you want.

In that state we work on the quick, automatic reactions that keep a problem going. That might be the urge that hits before you’ve even thought about it, or the rush of dread as a plane door closes. Here are the other tools I may use.

  • Rewind. A gentle way to look back at a painful memory or a fear from a safe distance. You don’t relive it.
  • Symbology. We work with the pictures your mind comes up with. Then we change how a feeling looks and feels.
  • Time Line Therapy. You picture your life as a line through time. Then you look at past events from a new angle.
  • NLP. Noticing the words and mental pictures you use, and trying out more helpful ones.

These are some of the methods I’m trained in and like to use. I’ll explain what I’m doing and why, and we keep what helps you.

I don’t read the same script to everybody. I plan each session around what you’ve shared, and I change course if something isn’t landing. I’ll also show you some simple self-hypnosis. My goal is for you to rely on me less over time.

Working with me, by video or in Adelaide

It starts with a free 15-minute phone call. Then we meet by video anywhere in Australia, or in person in Adelaide by arrangement.

  1. We talk first, for free

Pick a time of day that suits you and I’ll phone within 24 hours. In 15 minutes we work out if I’m the right fit. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.

  2. You get a plan and a total cost

Many issues fit four sessions. Others need a longer plan, which we map out in your first session. Quitting smoking and quitting vaping each have their own program. We meet by video or in Adelaide by arrangement, and nothing starts until you know the full price.

  3. Your sessions, and a recording to keep

It’s always me you work with, on Google Meet from home or in person in Adelaide if we’ve arranged it. You take a recording home to play between visits, so you keep building on the work.
