Signs of anxiety you might know too well

You’re in big company: 17.2% of Australians aged 16 to 85 had an anxiety disorder in a single year, the ABS found.

  • You lie awake at 3am and your brain is already making lists.
  • A text that says “can we talk?” ruins your afternoon.
  • You plan for every disaster, then plan for them again.
  • You skip things you used to like, because the nerves beforehand cost too much.
  • You feel tired and restless at once, even after a full night’s sleep.

A couple of these? Keep reading. Nearly all of them, or thoughts of harming yourself? Please see your GP too, or call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Why worry doesn’t listen to logic

Worry is an alarm that goes off too easily. It sits deep in your nervous system, below your thinking mind. That’s why you can know the bill is paid and still feel sick opening the envelope.

Avoiding things feels safer, so the avoidance behaviour sticks. The alarm runs on habit, and a habit learns by doing, not by reasoning. Talking helps your thoughts. Hypnotherapy works with the alarm.

How hypnosis can help with anxiety

Hypnosis is focused relaxation, a bit like being lost in a good book. You stay awake and aware, and you can stop at any time. Some call it reaching the subconscious. In that settled state we rehearse each trigger, so your body can learn a steadier response.

I mostly use three methods here. I’ve found them useful. We choose together.

Time Line Therapy helps you look back at past experiences where a pattern began, from a safe distance. For some people, old feelings feel less charged that way.

Rewind is a gentle method for memories or fears that still feel raw. You stay in control, and you don’t have to relive the details.

NLP gives you practical ways to change unhelpful pictures and self-talk. You also learn self-hypnosis, a bit like guided mindfulness, to manage hard days alone.

How anxiety hypnotherapy works: video or Adelaide

It begins with a free 15-minute phone call, and I ring you back within 24 hours.

  1. Book your free call

Fifteen minutes on the phone. I tell you straight if I think I can help. Nothing to sign. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.

  2. Session one: your plan

We map what sets you off and what you’ve tried. We tailor the plan to you and agree what to address first. The $300 for this session is taken off the plan.

  3. Follow-up sessions

Each appointment has a short chat, then hypnosis in a chair, eyes closed. We check how you’re going each time. If something isn’t landing, we change it. You take a recording home to play between visits, plus a simple self-hypnosis routine.

For video you need a quiet room, a steady internet connection and headphones. We use Google Meet. If the call drops, I ring you straight back. If you’d rather sit across from me in person, we can arrange that.

Still weighing it up?Ring-back within 24 hours, at a time you pick. Fifteen minutes, and you can ask me anything.

What the research says about hypnosis for anxiety

A key summary is a 2019 review by Valentine and colleagues. It combined 15 studies. By the end, the typical person who had hypnosis was less anxious than about 79% of people in the comparison groups. That gap was still there at follow-up.

The review also found it did more when added to other psychological help than when used alone. And 15 studies is not a lot. So my honest view: hypnotherapy works alongside your care, not instead of it.

Is hypnotherapy for anxiety safe?

For most adults, yes. No medicine is involved, and you stay aware the whole time. The downsides are mild: you might feel sleepy or emotional for a short while afterwards. Now and then an old memory brings some distress, and we slow down if it does.

I work with adults only, not children and adolescents. If you live with psychosis, or a serious mental illness without support yet, please see your GP first. Keep seeing your GP or psychologist while we work, and don’t change any medicine without your doctor. If you’re in crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or 000 in an emergency.

What anxiety hypnotherapy costs in Adelaide: $1,500 to $3,000

We start with a 90-minute session for $300. In it we put your plan together, usually 6 to 12 sessions, and you hear the full cost before you commit to anything.

Agreed before you start: your plan, $1,500 to $3,000 in total

Paid at the start, a plan is $250 a session: $1,500 for six sessions, $3,000 for twelve. Paid as you go it is $300 a session, $1,800 to $3,600. Your $300 first session counts towards the plan either way, and two instalments can be arranged.

  • Every session comes with a recording to keep, and the plan comes with follow-up from me and 12 months of support. Prepaid sessions last 12 months; anything unused can go to another issue or to someone you know.
  • Card or bank transfer, no surcharge. Prices in Australian dollars, no GST. Not covered by Medicare; some health fund extras pay a small benefit, so check with your fund.

Questions about anxiety hypnotherapy in Adelaide

People ask me these most on the free 15-minute call.

Does hypnotherapy work for anxiety?

Hypnotherapy can help many people, especially alongside a GP or psychologist. The 2019 review in the research section is encouraging, though small. I can’t promise a result. Feeling calmer after a session is real, but it is not a success rate.

What’s the success rate for anxiety hypnotherapy?

I don’t quote one. The 79% figure in the research section compares groups in studies. It can’t tell you what will happen for you. Instead, we track your own progress.

How effective is hypnosis for anxiety?

In the studies so far, people given hypnosis ended up less anxious than comparison groups, on average. It did more alongside other psychological help. With only 15 studies, see it as promising, not settled.

Can hypnosis help with anxiety and panic attacks?

It can be part of the help. Panic has its own pattern, so see my panic attack hypnotherapy page. If your fear centres on one thing, like a phobia or public speaking, a shorter program may suit.

How many hypnotherapy sessions are usually needed for anxiety?

Usually 6 to 12. We agree a number in your first session and check it as we go. If it isn’t helping, I’ll say so and suggest where to go instead.

Can hypnotherapy help with physical symptoms of anxiety?

Many people experience anxiety in the body first: a tight chest, a churning stomach or insomnia. Hypnosis gives your body practice at settling. Please get new anxiety symptoms checked by your GP first.

Can hypnotherapy help with severe anxiety?

It needs your GP and a psychologist or other therapist first. Hypnotherapy can sit beside that care, not replace it. If you feel unsafe, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or 000.

Is video as good as seeing you for hypnosis in Adelaide?

For most of this work, yes. What matters is your focus, and many people settle more easily at home. Face-to-face sessions are available in Adelaide by arrangement.

What are the potential downsides of hypnotherapy?

Usually small: some sleepiness, or feeling emotional for a while. You stay in control the whole time. The bigger risk is skipping medical care, so keep seeing your GP.

Can you share some success stories with hypnotherapy for anxiety?

I share how clients felt, in their own words, above. I don’t publish before and after stories, because one person’s result doesn’t predict yours. You can also read my 30 Google reviews.

Is it covered by Medicare?

No, and you don’t need a GP referral to see me. Some health fund extras pay a little back, so check with your fund. Keep taking any prescribed medicine as usual.
