Signs interview nerves are holding you back

  • You rehearse answers at 2am, then can’t remember them in the room.
  • “Tell us about yourself” makes your mind go blank.
  • A racing heart, sweaty palms and racing thoughts hit as you walk in.
  • Your voice shakes or your stomach churns, and some days you feel sick.
  • You talk yourself out of applying for jobs you’d be good at, so your job search stalls.
  • Panel and video interviews feel even harder.

Feeling nervous during an interview is normal. If these interview anxiety symptoms sound like more than that, read on.

Why job interviews feel so stressful

An interview packs a lot into one hour. You’re judged on the spot, by strangers, and you want to perform well. It’s even harder when you’re changing jobs, or finding a job after a break. Anxiety about a job interview can start days before.

To your body, that’s a threat. Your body’s natural stress response, often called fight-or-flight, kicks in. Adrenaline speeds your heart and narrows your focus, so recall gets patchy. Once you’ve gone blank once, the fear of going blank again builds before the next one. Avoidance then feels safer, so you stop applying.

How hypnotherapy for interview nerves works

In hypnosis you’re relaxed, focused and awake. In that state we rehearse the whole day while your body stays settled. That means the waiting room, the small talk, the interview questions and a tough one. Your nervous system gets a practice run before the real thing.

With NLP you link a calm feeling to a small cue, like pressing your thumb and finger together. You also learn a five-minute self-hypnosis routine to manage anxiety on the day. Use it in the car park before your next job interview, or before a video call. If you have a date, we plan the sessions around it.

How do I calm my nerves before a big interview?

Read the job description and research the company. Then tailor three short stories about your work. Do some practice answering questions out loud. Or ask a friend to run mock interviews with you. Sleep, eat something light, and arrive early. Breathing exercises can steady you: inhale for 4 seconds, then exhale slowly. Try reframing the interview as a two-way talk. You’re there to evaluate them too.

How interview anxiety therapy works: video or Adelaide

The program is four one-to-one sessions, and it starts with a free 15-minute phone call.

  1. A free call first

Fifteen minutes by phone. Tell me what’s coming up. If I’m not the right fit, I’ll say so. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.

  2. Your first session

We map what sets you off, from the invite email to the first question. Then we start the real work in that same session.

  3. Sessions two to four

We build on each step and tune it to your next event. If your interview is booked, we plan the sessions around the date. You take a recording home, plus a quick relaxation routine for the minutes before you walk in.

If you join by video

  • Most of my sessions happen by video on Google Meet.
  • You need a quiet room, a steady connection and headphones.
  • If the call drops, I ring you straight back.
  • If you live in Adelaide and would like to sit in the same room, we can arrange that.

Still weighing it up? Ask me anything on a free 15-minute call. I ring back within 24 hours, at a time you choose.

What the research says about hypnosis for interview anxiety

I know of no trials of hypnosis for anxiety in interviews in particular. The broader evidence is a 2019 review by Valentine and colleagues. It pooled 15 studies on anxiety in general and found a clear average benefit.

So the honest answer is “possibly”. Preparing for interviews still does a lot of the work. Hypnotherapy can help you bring a calmer body to that interview prep.

Is hypnotherapy for interview anxiety safe?

For most adults, yes. No medicine is involved, and you stay aware and in control the whole time. You might feel a little sleepy for a short while after a session.

Do the nerves come with panic attacks, low mood or worry that follows you everywhere? Then see your GP as well. If you live with psychosis, or a serious mental illness without support yet, start with your GP. In a crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or 000.

Your GP can help too

If you suffer from anxiety well beyond interviews, your GP can refer you to a psychologist with a Medicare rebate under Better Access. They may offer cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Hypnotherapy can sit alongside that.

Questions about interview anxiety therapy in Adelaide

These come up most on the free call.

Does hypnotherapy work for interview anxiety?

It may help you feel calmer going in, especially alongside good preparation. There are no trials on interviews in particular, as the research section explains. Feeling calmer after a session is welcome, but it isn’t a success rate.

What’s the success rate for interview anxiety hypnotherapy?

I don’t quote one. No good study gives a figure. We track your own goals instead, like applying for the next step in your career.

How do I overcome anxiety before an interview?

Prepare, then stop. Over-preparation can feed the worry. Do your practice the day before, not at midnight. On the morning, move your body a little and keep caffeine low. On the way, try listening to music you like. A slow out-breath before you walk in helps settle the jitters.

How do I reduce anxiety during a job interview?

Try grounding techniques: plant your feet, sip some water, and keep easy eye contact. Breathe out before each answer. If you lose your thread, pause and bring your focus back to the question. Interviewers expect nerves.

How do I get over crippling interview anxiety?

Start with your GP if it stops you applying for work at all. A psychologist can help with the bigger picture. Hypnotherapy can add rehearsal in a calm state, so the day feels less intimidating.

What is the name for the fear of interviews?

There’s no official name for anxiety around interviews. It’s a kind of performance anxiety, close to the fear of public speaking. My public speaking page covers that side.

Why do I throw up before an interview?

Stress hormones can upset your stomach, and some people feel sick or vomit. If it happens often, or with other symptoms, see your GP to rule out anything else.

Why do I feel anxious after an interview?

It’s common to replay every answer once the pressure drops. Write down what went well and one thing to change. Then do something that takes your full attention. If post-interview anxiety lasts for days, use your self-hypnosis routine to switch off.

Can you help with a video interview?

Yes. Video interview anxiety has its own triggers. So we rehearse the set-up too: the camera, the waiting screen and the first hello. Many people find video stranger than a room, so it’s worth practising.

How soon before my interview should I start?

A few weeks out is ideal. If the date is close, we can space the sessions closer together.

Is it covered by Medicare?

No, and you don’t need a GP referral to see me. Some health fund extras pay a little back, so check with your fund.
