Before the trip, does this happen?
Being afraid of flying rarely waits for the plane.
- The flights to see family in Sydney or Melbourne stay unbooked in an open tab.
- You start losing sleep a week before, not just the night before.
- Friends quote safety numbers. You nod, and nothing changes.
- You’d rather drive the Dukes Highway for eight hours than fly for one.
- Sitting by the pool in Bali, you’re already worried about the trip back.
If a few of those ring true, you’re not alone. If panic attacks also happen on the ground, please see your GP as well.
Why the dread starts weeks before take-off
Each time you picture the flight, your body rehearses it. Heart up, stomach tight, sleep gone. Those pictures can turn into intrusive thoughts that pop up at 2am.
Your conscious mind already knows the safety numbers. The alarm doesn’t listen, because it thinks in pictures, not numbers. Avoidance makes it louder. Every trip you skip tells it the danger was real.
Sometimes the plane is just where another worry shows up: closed spaces, heights, or panicking with no way off. Past experiences matter too, like one rough flight that still feels unresolved. We sort that out early.
How hypnosis helps with a flying phobia
Hypnosis is a focused, relaxed state, like being lost in a good book. You stay aware and in control. In that calm trance, your mind and body practise the trip without the alarm.
Using hypnosis, we rehearse the journey in small parts. The drive to Adelaide Airport. Check-in and the gate. Boarding, take-off, a few bumps, and landing in Perth. Your body learns a calmer version before the real one.
I also use Rewind, a gentle technique for taking the sting out of a frightening memory. Symbology works with the images your mind already uses. Neuro-linguistic programming and Time Line Therapy come in where they fit. Nervous flyers have been part of my work for years. These are some of the tools I’ve found useful.
For flight day you get practical tools. Deep breathing with a long breath out. Quick muscle relaxation. A short self-hypnosis routine for your seat.
How fear of flying hypnotherapy works: video or Adelaide
The program is four sessions, after a free 15-minute phone call.
- Free phone call, 15 minutes
Tell me when your next trip is. I’ll be straight about what’s possible before then. You can also ask me anything about hypnosis, like what it feels like or whether you stay in control.
- First session
We pin down the core of it: being shut in, turbulence, or dread of panic. Then we begin, with hypnosis and a first small step.
- Sessions two to four
Each hypnotherapy session starts with a short chat, then hypnosis in a chair, eyes closed. If dates allow, the last one falls close to departure. You take a recording home to play before you leave, and on the plane.
For video you need a quiet room, a steady connection and headphones. We use Google Meet, and if the call drops, I ring you straight back.

What the research says about hypnosis for a flying phobia
The research here is thin, and I’d rather say so. As far as I know, nobody has run a randomised trial of hypnosis for this phobia.
The study quoted most is by David Spiegel’s team, from 2015. They followed up 178 people after one session using hypnosis. Strong responders to hypnosis were more likely to report some benefit. With no comparison group, it shows who tends to respond, not how well it works. The “89%” quoted online is how many sent back the follow-up form, not a success rate.
The most evidence-based approach is gradual exposure, often used within CBT. A 2008 review by Wolitzky-Taylor and colleagues pooled 33 randomised studies of specific phobias. Exposure did better than no help, placebo and other talking therapies. So this program pairs hypnosis with small real steps, alongside your other care, not instead of it.
Is hypnotherapy for a flying phobia safe?
For most adults, yes. No medicine is involved. You might feel a little drowsy or emotional for a short while afterwards.
Some people should start elsewhere. If a frightening flight keeps replaying in your head, start with a psychologist. If you live with psychosis, or a serious mental illness without support yet, see your GP first. Pregnant, or living with a heart or lung problem? Ask your GP whether flying is safe for you. Keep seeing your GP or psychologist while we work.

Questions about fear of flying hypnotherapy in Adelaide
What people ask me on the free call.
Does hypnotherapy work for fear of flying?
Hypnotherapy can help many people feel calmer about a trip, and it makes step-by-step practice easier. The research is thin, as shown above. Feeling calmer after a session is welcome, but it is not a success rate.
What’s the success rate for fear of flying hypnotherapy?
I don’t quote one. No good trial has measured it, so any figure would be a guess. The “89%” seen online is a form return rate. We track your own steps instead, like booking the ticket.
Will I be out of control in hypnosis?
No. You stay aware, can talk, and can end the session whenever you like.
Can online hypnotherapy help with a flying phobia?
Yes. What matters is your attention, and a screen doesn’t get in the way. Most of my sessions happen by video, with no drive or parking. Prefer to meet in person? Tell me on the free call.
When should I start, if my flight is booked?
Four weeks or more ahead works well. Need to fly sooner? Tell me the date, and I’ll say plainly what’s possible.
Is hypnotherapy covered by Medicare in Australia?
No. Medicare doesn’t cover hypnotherapy, and you don’t need a GP referral to see me. Some health funds pay a little back under extras, so check with yours.
What is the average cost of hypnotherapy sessions in Australia?
I don’t know of a reliable average, so I won’t guess. Fees vary with the practitioner and what’s included. Mine are $300 a session, or $1,000 for this program. Always ask for the total price.
How do I choose the right hypnotherapist?
Look for someone open about their training, not someone claiming to be the top one. Ask about training, memberships, the total price, and what happens if it isn’t helping.
What happens if it isn’t helping?
Say so. We check in every session and change tack when needed. If hypnotherapy isn’t right for you, I’ll tell you and suggest where to go. Unused prepaid sessions stay yours for a year.
